What an airbag module reset does
After a deployment, an airbag control module may store crash event data that a routine code-clear command cannot remove. Other SRS faults can come from airbags, pretensioners, sensors, wiring or power supply issues and require separate diagnosis.
A supported reset addresses stored crash data only. It does not repair deployed components, prove that the restraint system is safe, or replace the manufacturer’s inspection and repair procedure. If the manufacturer requires module replacement, replacement is the correct repair.
Before we reset: what must be repaired
What we check before accepting a reset
- Required airbags, pretensioners and other collision repairs have been completed
- The module is eligible under the applicable manufacturer repair procedure
- Module condition, part number and stored faults support the proposed work
When another repair is needed
- Required restraint-system repairs or inspections are still incomplete
- The module is damaged, unsupported or must be replaced under the manufacturer’s procedure
- The only goal is to turn off the warning light without repairing the system
A warning light going out is not a safety certification. The complete restraint system must be repaired and checked using the applicable manufacturer procedures.
How an SRS reset works
-
Confirm the module
Send the vehicle details, module label, available fault codes and repair history. We review support and the applicable replacement requirements before booking.
-
Scan the system
When the vehicle is available, we review SRS fault codes alongside the completed repairs. A scan alone cannot confirm that all physical repairs are correct.
-
Perform the supported procedure
For an eligible module, we carry out the confirmed data procedure. The method may require module removal and bench access.
-
Verify and document
For vehicle-based work, we rescan, check the warning-light behavior and document remaining faults. A module-only service requires installation and final vehicle checks by the repairer.
Common questions about SRS resets
Can a regular scan tool clear airbag crash data?
A routine scan-tool command may clear some fault codes, but stored crash event data may require a supported specialist procedure or module replacement. The correct approach depends on the exact vehicle and module.
Do I need a new airbag module after an accident?
Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for the exact vehicle and deployment event. Some modules require replacement. Physical appearance alone is not enough to establish that a module can be reused. We check this before accepting reset work.
Will the SRS light turn off after the reset?
That depends on the remaining faults and the completed repairs. Clearing crash data cannot fix a damaged component or wiring fault. We explain any faults still present and the next steps required.
Is this a mobile service?
Yes, in Austin and the surrounding area for supported modules. Some units must be removed and reset on the bench; we'll confirm which before the appointment.
What information do you need?
Year, make, model, the module part number or a photo of its label, and a list of the parts that were already replaced.
